There is a significant disparity which exists in the aggregate amount of salaries paid to the Engineering staff here, compared with what is paid in any English Town of a similar size or population, say Bristol for instance.

The total amount paid here would not be 90 per cent of what is paid there, whilst the pensions granted to old members of the staff during my time there compared favourably with what is paid here, and to show that this is not an unusual case, I would point out that the salaries paid to the Officers of the small District Council of Hornsey, in which suburb I had subsequently my offices, were on a similar footing, the Surveyor's salary starting at £1,250 rising to £1,500 per annum; whilst the other officers were paid in proportion.

Under these circumstances I would ask you to bring this application before the Government for their earnest consideration, and trust, Sir, that in sending it forward you may be able to give it your favourable recommendation.

The Honourable Mr. Wm. Chatham, Director of Public Works.

I have etc.,
